Parliament Security Breach: PM Modi Asks Ministers To Take Matter 'Seriously', Avoid Politics

This is the first time PM Modi has spoken on the lapse in Parliament's security that allowed two intruders to jump into the MP's sitting area and lob smoke bombs on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked senior ministers to take the security breach in Lok Sabha "seriously". "Take this incident seriously. Don’t indulge in politicking. We have to all take precautions," he is learnt to have told his ministers at a meeting on Thursday.

Lok Sabha's security was breached on Wednesday when two intruders, managed to jump into the MPs' sitting area from the visitors' gallery and hurl colour-smoke bombs. After the attack, the Opposition launched a massive protest over the security breach and demanded the suspension of BJP MP Pratap Simha, who allegedly issued passes to the visitors.

The Opposition on Thursday demanded suspension of business in Lok Sabha and a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the incident. The Opposition also sought to ask questions on the matter. However, the government is yet to take up the issue in the House.

While the government is yet to take up the issue, the MHA has ordered a high-level probe by a panel led by CRPF DG. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday said that the incident has been condemned by all.

"Since a probe has been ordered, there is no need to create chaos inside Parliament," the Defence Minister said amid Opposition sloganeering.

Kharge Writes To Dhankhar, Demands Amit Shah's Statement

Meanwhile, Congress president and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday, demanding a statement from Shah. Referring to the suspension of 15 Opposition MPs seeking a discussion in Parliament over the security breach, Kharge said that the "BJP is now shooting the messenger".

"Is it a crime to urge the Union Home Minister to make a statement in the House? Is it a crime to want a discussion on the perilous security breach? Does it not invoke draconian shades of dictatorship, a hallmark of the present dispensation," he asked in an X post.
