Parliament Monsoon Session: RS, LS Proceedings Adjourned Amid Oppn Uproar Over Inflation, GST

Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu requested the members to maintain the dignity of the House but several Opposition leaders trooped into the well of the House and started sloganeering.

New Delhi: Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned for the day on the first day of the Monsoon Session following sloganeering and disruption by opposition MPs over issues like price rise and GST. Later, the Lok Sabha proceedings were also adjourned for the day amid opposition uproar over the issue of price rise.

The Monsoon session began Monday with several newly elected members of the Upper House and the Lower House taking the oath.

As Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu was making some observations, several opposition leaders trooped into the Well of the House and started raising slogans.

"As some people have come determined not to allow the House to function and also enable members to go and vote in the Presidential election, I am adjourning the House for the day," the Chairman said as he adjourned the proceedings, news agency PTI reported.

As per news agency ANI, a joint Opposition including Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, and Shiv Sena protested at the pandemonium in the House after oath-taking and obituary. 

Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu requested the members to maintain the dignity of the House and the proceedings continue in the normal way but several Opposition leaders trooped into the well of the House and started sloganeering.

The Opposition members raised issues while interrupting the ongoing speech of the Rajya Sabha Chairman. They began sloganeering against the BJP-led Union government, saying "Tanasahi Nahi Chalegi (dictatorship will not go on)".

"Some people (members of parliament) have come here with an intention to disrupt the proceedings...The House stands adjourned for the day to meet again on Tuesday," Naidu announced, as quoted by ANI. 

There Should Be Dialogue In Parliament With An Open Mind: PM Modi

Ahead of the commencement of the Parliament's Monsoon session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday requested legislators to undertake meaningful discussions and make the session as useful and profitable as possible. "There should be dialogue in the Parliament with an open mind, if necessary, there should be a debate. I urge all MPs to contemplate deeply & discuss," he said, news agency ANI reported. 

Speaking to the reporters, PM Modi stated that Parliament runs and makes the greatest decisions with everyone's 'prayaas' (efforts), and he urged lawmakers to make the most of this session.

Speaking about policymaking, PM Modi said, "There should be Opposition, close analysis for constructive contribution to policy-making," news agency PTI reported. 

PM Modi said that this Session is extremely significant since elections for President and Vice President are being held.

Tributes In Rajya Sabha

When the Rajya Sabha assembled at 11 am, nearly 28 members took the oath of affirmation and obituary references were read in respect of several dignitaries who passed away recently.

The Rajya Sabha paid homage to former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, ex-UAE president Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and former Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki. 

Tributes were also paid to former members Kishore Kumar Mohanty, Robert Kharshiing, KK Veerappan, and santoor player Pandit Shivkumar Sharma.
