Opposition declares 'Bharat bandh' in protest against demonetisation today: LATEST UPDATES

New Delhi: The opposition has called for a nationwide shutdown (Bharat bandh) on Monday, in a protest against demonetisation of Rs 500 and RS 1000 currency notes by the central government.  The bandh has been called by various opposition parties.   • Bengal Chief Minister Mamata, and her party led wide protest march and said, "PM suddenly came up with this decision acting like God; Never asked who needs Rs 500/1000 and made the demonetisation move"
 
  • CPM leader Sitaram Yecgury, who also led a protest march lashed out at PM saying, "PM is not appearing before the parliament but delivers speeches in other countries"

  • While Opposition has called the shutdown, major political parties in the opposition in various states are not taking part in the shutdown
 
  • In Bihar's Darbhanga, the leftist parties attempted to halt a moving train and raised several slogans against the government on the railway tracks, in their protest against demonetisation
 
  • In Allahabad, Samajwadi party workers could be seen protesting and raising placards against the ruling party on Monday morning
 
  • All trade unions have also joined hands with the opposition and have declared a shut down. Only the trade union affiliated by Bhartiya Janta party would operate
 
  • The main opposition party, Congress on Sunday Accused the BJP of spreading misinformation, the Congress on Sunday, and said “it has not called for a 'Bharat bandh' or a countrywide shutdown on Monday but 'Jan Aakrosh Diwas' to hold protests over demonetisation”
 
  • "There will be protest rallies; we have not called for a 'Bharat bandh' (shutdown). Misinformation has been spread by the BJP which is ill-informed," said senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh
