A 72-year-old man who had travelled from Zimbabwe was found to be infected with Omicron variant last Friday. The next day, the NRI man's wife, who came with him from Zimbabwe, and his brother-in-law, who lives in Jamnagar, tested positive for coronavirus.

Their swab samples were then sent to the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC) to find out whether they were infected with the Omicron variant. The results came positive on Friday, the JMC said in a release.

Jamnagar Collector Saurabh Pardhi said their clinical condition was stable and were in isolation. The area in which the family lives has been declared as a containment zone.

Officials had also conducted an exercise of administering Covid-19 vaccines to people in the area who have not taken the first or second dose till date, the release said.

No other family members or school students who used to visit the house of the NRI man's brother-in-law for tuitions tested positive for coronavirus during contact tracing and testing exercise, JMC said.

So far, 25 cases of Omicron variant have been reported in India -- nine in Rajasthan, three in Gujarat, 10 in Maharashtra, two in Karnataka, one in Delhi. "Overall 25 Omicron cases in the country so far. All detected cases have mild symptoms. Less than 0.04 per cent of total variants detected," Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary at Union Health Ministry, said at a press conference.
