Northeast Was Known For Violence & Separatism, Now Moving On Path Of Peace: HM Shah In Shillong

Shah said that northeast has seen a sharp decline in the incidents of violence and civilian deaths in the last eight years.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said that northeast India is walking on a path of peace since Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister country.

Speaking at the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong, Meghalaya, the minister said that the northeast that exists today is different from what it was 8 years ago.

“If you compare the northeast that existed 8 years ago and the northeast that exists today, you will find that after Narendra Modi became the PM for the first time the northeast is walking on the path to peace and development,” he said.

Shah said that incidents of insurgency have seen a decline of 74 percent in the last eight years which was earlier known for shutdowns, bomb blasts, and firing, and local tourism and industries were also not growing.

He also mentioned that attacks on security personnel in the region have also reduced by 60 percent and civilian deaths by 89 percent.

“Earlier the entire northeast was known for shutdowns, strikes, bomb blasts & firing. Militants of various outfits affected the people of the northeast, the local tourism & industry weren't growing either. Within 8 years, incidents of insurgency have seen a decline of 74%,” the minister said.

He added, “Incidents of attacks on security personnel have gone down by 60%. As far as civilian deaths are concerned, it has gone down 89% & around 8,000 youths have surrendered & chosen to join the mainstream. This is a major achievement of PM Narendra Modi.”

Talking about AFSA, Shah said, “Under PM Modi, the northeast has gone ahead on the path of development. Peace has prevailed in the northeast. Earlier, a lot of demands were made to repeal AFSPA. Now, nobody needs to make demands, staying two steps ahead Govt is taking initiatives to repeal AFSPA.”

He also emphasised on the budget allocation for northeast India saying under PM Modi’s leadership, the budget has reached the villages today.

“Earlier, budget was allocated for the northeast but it didn't percolate. After PM Modi came to power, with several changes, budget has reached the villages today and can be seen converting into actual work. This is a major achievement,” he said.

PM Modi along with Union Minister Shah is visiting the northeastern states of Meghalaya and Tripura today.
