Nepal Prime Minister Thanked PM Modi For India's Support During Covid Crisis, Says Foreign Secy

PM Modi informed Deuba that their power export proposals have been cleared. Renewed commitment to move forward with the Pancheshwar project was also made during the meeting.

New Delhi: Nepalese Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday and thanked him for the help extended to Nepal during the Covid-19 crisis, reported news agency ANI. 

Nepal PM Deuba thanked PM Modi for standing by them during COVID & supplying them vaccines, medicines, medical oxygen,” said Foreign Secretary Harsha Vardhan Shringla during a press briefing following a meeting between both the heads of nation.

 

“Talks were positive, forward-looking; covered areas like security, development, trade,’ Shringla said. 

During the meeting, both sides reached a consensus on energy harvesting. “The collaboration covers the entire spectrum from generation to transmission to power trade,” the foreign secretary said.

For power trade, the PM conveyed to Nepal PM Deuba that their power export proposals have been cleared. This will contribute to Nepal's economic prosperity. There was also a renewed commitment by both sides to move forward with the Pancheshwar project,’ Shringla added. 

Two Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) were signed by Indian Oil Corporation and Nepal Oil Corporation for the renewal of the supply of petroleum products for a period of 5 years and another for sharing technical expertise.

With the launch of RuPay in Nepal, the foreign secretary said that it will “enhance financial linkages between the two countries.” 

“It is expected to facilitate bilateral tourist flows, strengthen people to people linkage,” he added. 

PM Deuba extended an invitation to PM Modi to visit Nepal at a mutually convenient date.
