Narada Sting Case SC Hearing: CBI Withdraws Appeal Against House Arrest Of TMC Leaders

Supreme Court was hearing the petition filed by CBI challenging the Calcutta High Court order allowing the house-arrest of four TMC leaders

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday withdrew its appeal filed in Supreme Court against the Calcutta High Court of placing the accused Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders in house arrest in Narada tape case.

According to initial reports, the investigating agency took back its appeal after the apex court said it would be better if CBI withdraws its appeal since the matter is pending before 5-judge bench of the Calcutta HC.

Four senior TMC leaders were given house arrest instead of judicial custody after their arrest in the Narada scam.

Supreme Court was hearing the petition filed by CBI challenging the Calcutta High Court order allowing the house-arrest of four TMC leaders - Firhad Hakim, Madan Mitra, Sovan Chatterjee and Subrata Mukherjee.

A vacation bench comprising Justices Vineet Saran and BR Gavai was hearing the case.

While making the observations, the top court also noted that it did not approve the conduct of West Bengal Chief Minister and other leaders laying siege of CBI office in Kolkata and thronging the trial court with supporters.

The Supreme Court also pointed out that CBI is free to take action against Mamata Banerjee, law miniser or anyone it thinks has attempted to subvert the rule of law and tried to create law and order situation.
