Mumbai Wakes Up To Light Rain Showers, IMD Issues 'Orange' Alert

The IMD Mumbai has in its regular bulletin predicted "moderate to heavy rain in the city and suburbs with a possibility of very heavy rainfall likely at isolated places" in the next 24 hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an 'orange' alert for Mumbai on Wednesday morning, predicting heavy to very heavy showers at a few places after the city woke up to light showers. The IMD Mumbai has in its regular bulletin predicted "moderate to heavy rain in the city and suburbs with a possibility of very heavy rainfall likely at isolated places" in the next 24 hours. The intensity of the rain reduced in most parts of Mumbai since Tuesday night and light showers were seen in most parts of the city and suburbs on Wednesday morning.

According to a PTI report, a civic official said that eastern and western suburbs recorded an average rainfall of 53.93 mm, 27.97 mm and 45.59 mm, respectively, in the last 24 hours, which ended at 8 am on Wednesday.

Road traffic was normal on Wednesday and there were no reports of waterlogging anywhere in the metropolis. Similarly, local trains were also running normally on both the Central Railway and Western Railway corridors. However, some commuters claimed the suburban services were running 10 to 15 minutes late.

An official of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking said their bus services were normal and there was no diversion, reported PTI.

On Tuesday, rains slowed down vehicular movement on roads at some places, but overall there was no major traffic snarl anywhere. There was no report of any major water-logging in the city. Most parts of the city and suburbs including Sion, Matunga Kurla, Chembur, Andheri and Parel received moderate to heavy showers since Monday night.

The southwest monsoon made onset over Mumbai on June 25 against the usual date of June 11. Mumbai has been witnessing waterlogging and traffic jams due to heavy rain ever since the monsoon advanced over the city.

The southwest monsoon has covered the entire country, advancing into the remaining parts of Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana, the IMD said.

The Met department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next five days in several states, including Maharashtra, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, and others.
