Mukhtar Ansari, Afzal Conviction: Here Are Names Of Two MLAs Still Left In Ansari Family

Mukhtar Ansari and his brother Afzal Ansari are convicted in a kidnapping and murder case. Here are the names of the two MLAs the Ansari family still has after their convictions.

An MP-MLA court in Uttar Pradesh's Ghazipur sentenced jailed mafia Mukhtar Ansari to ten years in prison on Saturday (April 29) in a kidnapping and murder case involving the death of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai. A 5 lakh fine was also imposed on the gangster-politician. He was virtually brought before the court today. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Afzal Ansari, also the brother of Mukhtar Ansari was also convicted in the same case. The court sentenced Afzal to four years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on him. His conviction means that he could lose his Lok Sabha membership.

According to the Representation of the People Act, any member who is convicted and sentenced to two years or more in prison will be disqualified from serving in the Lok Sabha. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi (from Wayanad in Kerala) and UP legislators such as Azam Khan (Rampur), his son Abdullah Azam (Suar), and BJP's Vikram Saini (Khatauli-Muzaffarnagar) were recently stripped of their seats under the same Act.

In the 2007 Gangsters Act case, Mukhtar Ansari was sentenced to ten years in prison and fined five lakh rupees by the Ghazipur court. Ansari, who has been in prison for over 15 years, now has nearly 60 cases against him. Mukhtar and Afzal Ansari joined the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in 2007 after claiming that the charges against them were false.

Ansari Family Still Has These Two MLAs:

It is to be noted that despite the convictions of both politicians, the Ansari family still has two MLAs. Abbas Ansari, Mukhtar's son, and Shoaib Ansari, Mukhtar's elder brother.

Mukhtar's son, Abbas Ansari, was elected to the Mau seat on the party ticket of Omprakash Rajbhar. Abbas has mastered the art of shooting and is a national-level professional shooter. Mukhtar's eldest brother Sibkatullah Ansari's son, Shoaib Ansari, was elected MLA from Ghazipur's Mohammadabad seat on a Samajwadi Party ticket in 2022.

In 1988, the Mau district in Uttar Pradesh was formed from the Azamgarh district. The Mau Assembly constituency elected a mafia-turned-politician named Mukhtar Ansari five times in a row.
