Mizoram Seeks Central Intervention To Lift Blockade By Assam, Alleges Miscreants Destroyed Railway Tracks

The Union government expressed grave concern over the Assam Mizoram border dispute that had led to violence.

Aizwa: Mizoram government has alleged that miscreants from Assam removed railway tracks and blocked National Highway (NH) 306 disrupting transportation to the state. It requested the Union government to intervene amid the border dispute with Assam.

Home Secretary Pu Lalnunmawia Chuaungo urged the Union government to take necessary action for the immediate removal of the blockade to ensure that the movement of goods and passengers to Mizoram is resumed.

"Unknown miscreants from Assam have destroyed/removed railway tracks at Mohammedpur Railway Station and Ramnathpur Railway Station in Hailakandi district in Assam. With this, the only railway line connecting Bairabi Railway Station in Mizoram has been blocked," said Lalbiaksangi.

Home Secretary added that the Silchar-Aizawl stretch of NH-306 has also been blocked at Kabuganj in the Barak Valley by people on the Assam side.

He stressed that no state agency or entity or the general public has any right to block national highways and railway lines, restricting the movement of people and goods.

"It is requested that the government of India may intervene and instruct the Govt of Assam to take necessary action for the immediate removal of the blockade so as to ensure resumption of the movement of goods and passengers along the National Highway and Railway line," he added.

Amid the ongoing border dispute, both Assam and Mizoram agreed to withdraw their respective Police forces and a neutral central force will be deployed along the disturbed region where five policemen and a civilian were killed following a violent clash recently.

According to reports, Central paramilitary troops will be deployed at the disputed border site till a permanent solution is found.

The situation turned violent after five Assam Police personnel were killed along with a civilian and over 50 others including a superintendent of police were injured when the Mizoram Police opened fire on a team of the Assam officials Monday.
