Militancy In South Kashmir Almost Wiped Out Today, The Focus Is Now On North Kashmir: IGP Kashmir

The operations are being carried out to bust the narco terror module as drugs are the main source of militancy.

New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir police have claimed that militancy in South Kashmir almost wiped out, with the killing of three more militants who were killed in a clean operation today at the Shopian district. Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said that so far the focus of the security operations has remained on South Kashmir, but from next month onwards our focus will be on North Kashmir.  He said that human and electronic intelligence is being developed after recent incidents in the Kupwara and Handwara areas where security forces suffered high casualties.
While south Kashmir has more local militants, North Kashmir is mostly having foreign militants. And this will make the operations in North Kashmir more deadly for security forces as most of the foreign militants are battle-hardened and highly trained.
IGP Kashmir dismissed the reports that militants are running short of arms and ammunition saying that the active militants in Kashmir are not running short of ammunition. We have recovered almost 25 AK weapons this year so far,” he said while replying to a query.
The operations in North come in wake of the busting of the narco-terror module that was busted in Kupwara. IGP said that the module is big and they are expecting more arrests soon.
“The module has already distributed Rs 3.5 Crores among the militants. The investigation is going and many arrests are expected soon,” he said, adding that the kingpin among the four have been arrested so far and they have also sold narco material in Amritsar worth Rs 5 Crore out of which 3.5 Crore have been distributed among militants.
Drugs are the main source of funding for militancy, where drugs procured from Pakistan are sold in big cities in different parts of the country and the money is used to fund terror activities. “These drugs reach Kashmir through associates and we have been successful in busting many of such modules,” he said.
