Mehbooba Mufti’s Flag Remark Stirs Protest in J&K, 4 BJP Workers Detained For Hoisting The Tricolour

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, once again stirred a controversy, by saying that she was not interested in contesting elections or holding the tricolour till the constitutional changes enforced on August 5 last year were rolled back.

Jammu and Kashmir: In retaliation to Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti’s remarks on the tri colour flag, four BJP workers on Monday claiming to be BJP workers from Kupwara district raising slogans of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' were detained by Jammu and Kashmir Police. BJP workers who protested against the PDF chief and tried hoisting the national flag at Lal Chowk were prevented from unfurling the tricolour and detained by the police during the act. Before being taken in the custody, one of the four said that he will hoist the tricolour in every part of Kashmir. Mehbooba Mufti, once again stirred a controversy after she said in a rally that she was not interested in contesting elections or holding the tricolour till the constitutional changes enforced on August 5 last year were rolled back. She categorically stated that she would hold the tricolour only when the separate flag of the erstwhile state was restored. Jammu and Kashmir had a separate constitution and flag before the Centre revoked its special status in August last year.
Her remarks were strongly criticised by the BJP who accused the president of "disrespecting" the Indian flag and reiterated that the revocation of Article 370 was done constitutionally and that it will not be restored. In fact, senior BJP leader and Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the comments on not holding the tricolour till the Kashmiri flag is restored is "downright denunciation" of the national flag's sanctity, as per PTI report. The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee also condemned former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti’s statement on the tricolour, saying it is unacceptable and has hurt the sentiments of people.
