Manipur Governor Sets August 29 As New Date To Convene Assembly Session
This is the Manipur Cabinet's third such decision since July. If convened, the monsoon session will be the fourth of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey has called the monsoon session of the Assembly for August 29, according to a notification issued on Tuesday, news agency PTI reported. The state Cabinet, helmed by Chief Minister N Biren Singh, suggested convening the session on that day on Monday. This is the Manipur Cabinet's third such decision since July. If convened, the monsoon session will be the fourth of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly.
The governor "hereby summons the 4th session of 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly to meet at 11 am, on Tuesday, the 29th August,'' the notification was quoted by PTI in its report.
Despite a proposal from the State Cabinet, the 60-member Manipur Assembly failed to convene a special session on Monday to examine the current ethnic violence since Raj Bhavan did not issue any notification to assemble it.
Earlier on Monday, Congress claimed that the failure to convene the Monsoon session of the Manipur Assembly despite repeated pleas from the state administration is additional proof of the "breakdown" of the state's constitutional machinery.
The pain of the people of Manipur continues, according to Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, while the prime minister is consumed with "refurbishing his self-styled Vishwaguru" image and the home minister is "busy electioneering."
Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh had stated: “On July 27th, the state government requests the Governor of Manipur to convene a special session of the Assembly in the third week of August. On August 4th, Governor is requested once again to convene a special session, but this time on a specific date, namely August 21st. Today is August 21st and the special session has not been called. There has been no Monsoon session of the Assembly either. This is further evidence that the Constitutional machinery has simply broken down in Manipur."
