Maharashtra Nagar Panchayat Election: BJP Emerges As Single Largest Party, MVA Bags Most Seats

Maharashtra Nagar Panchayat Election: Out of 1,649 seats of 106 Nagar Panchayats BJP won 384 seats followed by NCP with 344 seats, Congress had 316 seats while Shiv Sena bagged 284 seats.

New Delhi: Results for 97 out of 106 Nagar Panchayats — semi-urban local bodies or government bodies for areas with a small population — in Maharashtra have been declared so far.

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) will be forming most Nagar Panchayats but the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has become the largest party as per the trends.

In the recently held Maharashtra Nagar panchayat election, NCP won 25, BJP emerged victorious in 24, Congress in 18, Shiv Sena in 14, and others won 16 Nagar panchayats.

The State Election Commission declared the results on Wednesday, stating that out of 1,649 seats of 106 Nagar Panchayats BJP won 384 seats followed by the NCP with 344 seats. The Congress party had 316 seats while the Shiv Sena bagged 284 seats.

BJP’s Maharashtra Unit President Chandrakant Patil on Wednesday said that his party has recently emerged as the biggest political force in the state and can lead 24 Nagar panchayats.

Talking to reporters, Patil claimed that the party has so far won 400 seats in the recent elections to 106 Nagar panchayats in the state.

“Elections were held for 106 Nagar panchayats in the state in which BJP has won more than 400 seats so far. We are in a strong position to lead 24 civic bodies and we would need the support of a few councilors to claim six others,” he added.

Patil said that despite being out of power for almost 26 months, the BJP has won a massive victory.

Meanwhile, NCP claimed on Wednesday voters have rejected the BJP in the Nagar panchayat elections in Maharashtra.

The ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) won 80 percent seats, claimed NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik, even though the opposition BJP emerged as the single largest party after winning 384 out of 1,649 seats.

The MVA alliance of Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress has won 80 percent of seats in Nagar panchayat polls. It underscores that voters have rejected the BJP," Malik, a state minister, told reporters.

In many local bodies, MVA constituents contested separately, yet they managed to win and keep the BJP out of power. It shows how much people are averse to the BJP, Malik added.
