Kerala Nursing Student Death: Three Classmates Held, Note Sent For Forensic Analysis
The police recovered a note from Ammu’s belongings with the words “I Quit,” suggesting suicide; however, the note has been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory to confirm its authenticity.
Pathanamthitta police have detained three classmates of Ammu Sajeev, a 22-year-old nursing student, in connection with her death. Ammu, a fourth-year student at the Government Nursing College, fell from her hostel building on November 15. The arrested students—Aleena Dilip, A.T. Akshita, and Anjana Madhu—were charged with abetment to suicide and are set to appear in court by Friday afternoon.
The trio was taken into custody from their homes and interrogated at the Pathanamthitta police station before formal arrests were made. This action follows a complaint by Ammu’s family, who alleged that it was not a suicide and the accused were responsible for her death. The police also recorded the statement of Ammu’s brother, Akhil Sajeev, who dismissed the possibility of suicide and accused the college authorities and the three students of foul play, as per a report on The New Indian Express.
Pathanamthitta DySP S. Nandakumar stated that contradictions in the suspects’ testimonies and evidence from phone data led to their arrests. The police recovered a note from Ammu’s belongings with the words “I Quit,” suggesting suicide; however, the note has been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory to confirm its authenticity, reported On Manorama. A separate inquiry by a team appointed by the Health University has concluded, with a report expected next week. This report is anticipated to include recommendations to prevent similar incidents.
The incident has sparked widespread protests. Student organizations, including SFI, ABVP, and KSU, held marches to the college in Chuttipara, with tensions escalating into violence. Akhil Sajeev reiterated his belief that the case involves foul play, urging authorities to ensure justice for his sister.
The police investigation continues as Ammu’s family and public demand clarity on the circumstances surrounding her death.
