Jodhpur Communal Violence: Curfew Extended Till May 6 As Police Arrest 140 Persons

Internet services in Jodhpur will still remain suspended in order to avoid spreading of rumours.

New Delhi: The curfew imposed by the Rajasthan administration in Jodhpur city till Wednesday midnight after violent clashes erupted between two communities a night before Eid-Ul-Fitr over hoisting a religious flag at the Jalori gate circle has been extended till May 6, Friday. An order in this regard was issued by the District Police Commissioner so as to maintain peace and bring life back to normal in the city, reported news agency ANI.

"The curfew imposed in Jodhpur Commissionerate area on May 3 has been extended till May 6...Raikabagh Palace Bus Stand and Raikabagh Railway Station have been excluded from the curfew," read the order.

However, the order has granted some exemptions as students have been allowed to appear for examinations. Personnel engaged in medical services, Judicial officers, bank officials, and media persons have also been given permission to carry out their day to day work.

Internet services in the city will still remain suspended in order to avoid spreading of rumours.

"The decision to resume mobile internet services will be taken after assessing the law & order situation. Currently, mobile internet services remain suspended," said Himanshu Gupta, Jodhpur District Magistrate, as reported by ANI.

According to the police, the situation is under control and no untoward incident has been reported since yesterday. In the last two days 140 people have been arrested related to the violent clashes that happened on Monday night, just before Eid.

"Currently, the situation is peaceful. Till now, around 140 persons have been arrested and 14 cases have been registered. A meeting was held with Bharatiya Janata Party leaders today and they have suspended their protest for now," said Hawa Singh Ghumaria, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), reported ANI.

On May 2, Monday, clashes erupted between two communities after some miscreants replaced a religious flag of one of the community at Balmukand Bissa at the Jalori Gate intersection circle in Jodhpur. The move was objected by the other community, which resulted in violence.
