Under-Construction Bridge Collapses In Jharkhand's Giridih, No Casualties Reported

An under-construction bridge's girder collapsed due to heavy rain in the Giridih district of Jharkhand. The officials confirmed no casualties or injuries during the incident.

Following a series of bridge collapses in Bihar over the past week, a similar incident involving an under-construction bridge has emerged in Bihar's neighboring state Jharkhand. According to an official, a girder of an under-construction bridge collapsed and a pillar tilted due to heavy rain in Giridih district of Jharkhand on Saturday night.

No injuries or loss of life were reported in the incident involving the bridge, constructed over the Arga River in Deori block, about 235 km from Ranchi, the state capital.

“A single-span girder collapsed and a pillar got tilted. The contractor has been asked to rebuild the portion,” Executive Engineer of Giridih's Road Construction Department, Vinay Kumar said, PTI reported.

Although the Executive Engineer did not disclose the cost of the project, PTI cited sources as reporting that the bridge is being constructed at a cost of around Rs 5 crore and it would connect remote villages in Giridih with those in the Jamui district of Bihar. Another engineer noted that the casting on the collapsed girder had been completed only a week ago, and it could have needed at least 28 days to strengthen.

Bridges Collapse In Bihar

Recently, an incident of bridge collapse was reported from the Bheja police station area of Madhubani district of Bihar, situated in the state's northern extreme, along the borders with Nepal. This marked the fifth such incident to have been reported from the state in just over a week.

Officials remained tight-lipped about the incident, but PTI cited sources in the Rural Works Department, who was responsible for constructing the 75-meter-long bridge,  as confirming that one of the pillars was washed away a few days ago.

They highlighted that the bridge, being built at a cost of approximately Rs 3 crore over the Bhutahi River, had been affected by heavy rains in Nepal's catchment areas, causing the river to swell.
