In A First, EAM Jaishankar Speaks To Taliban Minister. Thanks For Condemning Pahalgam Attack

EAM Jaishankar spoke with Taliban FM Muttaqi, the first political contact since the Taliban takeover.

Jaishankar welcomed Afghanistan's rejection of efforts to create distrust between the nations and thanked Muttaqi for condemning the Pahalgam terror attack.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday spoke to Taliban foreign minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi marking the first political-level contact between the two countries after the Taliban captured Kabul in August 2021.

During the telephone conversation, Jaishankar welcomed Afghanistan's rejection of attempts to "create distrust" between the two countries. He also thanked Muttaqi for condemning the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. 

"Good conversation with Acting Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi this evening. Deeply appreciate his condemnation of the Pahalgam terrorist attack," Jaishankar said in a post on X. 

"Welcomed his firm rejection of recent attempts to create distrust between India and Afghanistan through false and baseless reports," he said.

"Underlined our traditional friendship with the Afghan people and continuing support for their development needs. Discussed ways and means of taking cooperation forward," the Union minister added.
