On April 16, clashes erupted between Hindus and Muslims in a north-west Delhi neighbourhood during a parade commemorating Hanuman Jayanti. As the procession passed past Jahangirpuri's C-Block, a brawl erupted, which quickly escalated into stone pelting, injuring a few police officers and a civilian. The local police department opened an investigation, which was eventually moved to the crime branch.
Earlier last month, while seeking anonymity, a police officer had informed HT, “Of the three alleged prime conspirators, two are Mohammad Ansar and Sheikh Salim alias Salim Chikna. The names of a few more alleged accused such as Imam Sheikh alias Sonu and Tabrez Khan may also be mentioned as the prime conspirators in the final charge-sheet."
The 37 people held have been charged with 12 offenses, including rioting, arson, attempted murder, and criminal conspiracy. In addition to the 12 provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), section 25 of the Arms Act was included in the first information report (FIR) filed at the Jahangirpuri police station, according to authorities.
