Ruckus In J&K Assembly As MLAs Demand Resolution Against Waqf Amendment Bill

Ruckus in the J&K Assembly as National Conference MLAs protested the Speaker's refusal to allow a resolution against the Waqf Amendment Bill.

A ruckus erupted in the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly over the Waqf Bill on Monday. The National Conference and independents pushed for a resolution against it. The party leader, Tanveer Sadiq, demanded an adjournment motion. The House was adjourned for 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, BJP MLAs insisted on continuing with the Question Hour, holding up its copies and raising slogans as the chaos intensified.

Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather was heard said, "...I have seen the rules and as per Rule 58, no matter which is sub-judice can be brought up for adjournment. Since this issue is in the Supreme Court and I have got a copy of it, the rule clearly says that we cannot discuss it through an adjournment motion.

While speaking on the matter with ANI, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Waheed Para said, "The Islamic religious properties are a legacy left behind by our ancestors, and this is a religious matter of the Muslims. To make decisions and pass laws for Muslims without the inclusion of Muslims is not right. All members of the Muslim community have openly resented this bill. Seeing the Waqf properties as mere properties is wrong. It is a matter of faith and shall be treated accordingly."

Soon after the adjournment was called, Para, while speaking to ANI, said, that when Article 370 and CAA were brought in the court, the party has brought had resolution. “Many states had brought it and today we want to register our protest against the Waqf Bill”. He said it was unfortunate, that the Speaker reject the resolution.

“They are playing a mix match. By not opposing this bill today, it has been shown that the Jammu and Kashmir government is compromising on the issues of Kashmir and Muslims," Para further added.

Meanwhile, Congress MLA Irfan Hafeez Lone while speaking to ANI said, "It is a violation of the Constitution, democracy, and rule of law... Numbers do not matter in a democracy. They should have taken us in their confidence and respected our emotions... You are brazenly violating rule of law, federalism, and secularism. This is a matter of serious concern. We will agitate for India to be free of such an ideology..."

Hafeez was holding a banner which read “Waqf Amendment 2025 Unacceptable”
