'Is He Your Friend?' CJI Gavai Rebukes Lawyer For Calling Justice Varma By Name

Justice Varma came under scrutiny after a fire at his official residence on March 14 led to the discovery of bags filled with half-burnt currency notes.

Chief Justice of India BR Gavai on Monday reprimanded advocate Mathews Nedumpara in the Supreme Court for referring to Justice Yashwant Varma of the Allahabad High Court casually as "Varma" during a hearing on a plea seeking an FIR against the judge.

Nedumpara was pressing for the urgent listing of his petition over the massive cash recovery from Justice Varma’s residence.

However, his repeated informal reference to the judge prompted a sharp response from CJI Gavai, "If you want me to dismiss it now, I will dismiss it now! Is Justice Varma your friend? He is still a learned judge of the High Court… how are you referring to him as 'Varma'?"
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also objected, reminding the court that Justice Varma remains a sitting judge.

Nedumpara’s petition claims that no FIR was filed due to the Veeraswamy judgment, which mandates prior approval from the Chief Justice to initiate proceedings against a judge.
