Indian Navy Airlifts Critically Injured Chinese Mariner From Bulk Carrier Off Mumbai Coast: WATCH

The joint operation coordinated by MRCC (Mumbai) with Indian Navy led to the safe and timely evacuation of the Chinese patient.

The Indian Navy on Tuesday successfully conducted a medical evacuation of a critically injured Chinese mariner from a bulk carrier off Mumbai coast.

The Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC), Mumbai, received a distress call from the bulk carrier named 'Zhong Shan Men,' which was 200 nautical miles (approximately 370 km) from Mumbai, reporting heavy blood loss due to a critical injury to the 51-year-old mariner, urging an immediate evacuation.

After receiving the distress call, the Indian Navy acted swiftly and launched a Sea King helicopter from the Indian Naval Air Station INS Shakira at 0550 hours, Indian Navy said in its statement.

The weather conditions during the evacuation were quite challenging with winds over 45 knots and the ship experiencing heavy roll, in addition to non-availability of a clear area on the continuous deck.

Despite this, the Navy successfully airlifted the injured patient from the bridge wing of the vessel. He was transported back to the air station by an Indian Navy chopper.

Subsequently, he was shifted to a hospital, where he received medical treatment.

Indian Coast Guard Ship Samrat was also diverted in the area to provide assistance in the medevac.

The joint operation coordinated by MRCC (Mumbai) with Indian Navy led to the safe and timely evacuation of the Chinese patient.
