Bharat Ka Paani, Bharat Ke Haq Me Rukega: PM Modi On Indus Waters Treaty Suspension

PM Modi was referring to the recent suspension of the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan which was suspended "in abeyance" following the Pahalgam Terror Attack.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday spoke on the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan saying that the water belonging to India will flow in India and will be brought to use in the country.

The prime minister was referring to the recent suspension of the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan which was suspended "in abeyance" following the Pahalgam Terror Attack, in which 26 people were killed in Jammu and Kashmir.

"Earlier the water meant for Indians was going outside. Ab Bharat ka paani, Bharat ke haq me bahega, Bharat ke Haq me rukega aur Bharat ke hi kaam ayega... (But now, the water from India will flow in India's interest. The water will be stopped in India's interest and will be used in India)," PM Modi said while speaking at ABP Network's India At 2047 Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

The statement on the Indus Water Treaty was PM Modi's first response after India downgraded its bilateral relations with Pakistan following Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, that killed 26 people, mostly tourists.

India, among other punitive actions, announced the suspension of the 1960 accord, which governs water sharing between the two countries.

Earlier on April 24, Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed to punish the terrorists involved in the Pahalgam terror attack and their backers. In a high-level meeting with the top defence brass on April 29, Modi asserted that the armed forces have "complete operational freedom" to decide on the mode, targets and timing of India’s response to the terror attack, according to government sources.

The Indus Waters Treaty, brokered by the World Bank, has governed the use of the Indus River and its tributaries between India and Pakistan since 1960.
