India has reported 324 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of active cases in the country to 6,815, according to the latest data released by health authorities. The rise in cases has sparked fresh concerns among public health experts, especially with the detection of infections among elderly and vulnerable populations.
In the same 24-hour period, three COVID-related deaths were reported from Delhi, Jharkhand and Kerala. All three individuals had multiple underlying health conditions and were receiving medical treatment for other serious illnesses.
COVID-19 Cases and Deaths in Different States
In Delhi, a 90-year-old woman succumbed to complications related to respiratory acidosis, congestive cardiac failure (CCF), and chronic kidney disease (CKD). While she tested positive for COVID-19, doctors confirmed that the primary cause of death was her existing comorbidities, and the COVID-19 infection was incidental.
In Jharkhand, a 44-year-old man died due to aspiration pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), septic shock, and had a medical history of hypertension and hypothyroidism. His condition was complicated by a concurrent COVID-19 infection.
In Kerala, a 79-year-old male patient passed away following a battle with COVID-19 pneumonia, sepsis, and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). He had a long-standing history of diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease (CAD), CKD, heart failure, and stroke. The patient had also undergone hemiarthroplasty surgery recently following a femur fracture on May 17, 2025.
Precautions To Take Amid Rising COVID-19 Cases
While the overall numbers remain under control compared to previous waves, the steady rise in daily COVID-19 infections and the presence of fatalities among high-risk patients have prompted authorities to step up surveillance. The Ministry of Health is advising all states to maintain hospital readiness, enhance testing capacity, and continue public messaging about preventive measures.
Citizens, particularly senior citizens and those with underlying conditions, are being urged to follow COVID-appropriate behaviour, including wearing masks in crowded areas, maintaining hand hygiene, and staying up to date on vaccinations.
Health experts caution that even though many of the recent deaths involve comorbidities, the role of COVID-19 in aggravating these conditions cannot be ignored.
