India's Active Covid-19 Cases Cross 6,000 Mark, 6 Deaths In Last 24 Hours

As of June 8, India has 6,133 active Covid cases, with the health ministry confirming six deaths in the last 24 hours. Kerala continues to report the highest number of cases, followed by Gujarat.

The active Covid-19 case tally in India crossed the 6,000 mark on Sunday with 769 fresh infections logged in the past two days, according to the latest update from the Union health ministry data.

As of now, India has 6,133 active Covid cases, with the ministry confirming six fatalities in the last 24 hours. Kerala continues to report the highest number of active cases, followed by Gujarat, West Bengal and Delhi. 

According to the health ministry data, the active cases in Kerala stand at 1950 and two deaths reported since yesterday. Gujarat's active cases total stands at 822, followed by Bengal at 693, and Delhi at 686. Maharashtra and Karnataka have reported 595 and 366 cases, respectively. Since yesterday, two deaths were reported in Karnataka, while one person died in Tamil Nadu.  

In view of the rising Covid cases, the central health authorities are conducting mock drills to check and ensure facility-level preparedness and have directed all states to maintain uninterrupted oxygen supplies, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines, news agency PTI reported citing official sources.

While the majority of infections remain mild and are being treated at home, officials have emphasised the importance of maintaining preparedness in case of further escalation.

India has reported 65 deaths since January this year. Notably, on May 22, the number of active cases stood at just 257, highlighting the sudden spike in active cases within a short span.

A comprehensive technical evaluation of the situation was held on June 2 and 3, led by Dr. Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services to assess the Covid situation and preparedness measures in place.

The meetings involved representatives from the Disaster Management Cell, Emergency Management Response Cell, National Centre for Disease Control, Indian Council of Medical Research, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, central government hospitals in Delhi, and all states and Union Territories.

Enhanced monitoring of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) is underway and the state and district surveillance teams under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) have been instructed to remain on alert.

"Testing is recommended for all admitted SARI cases and 5 per cent of ILI cases as per guidelines, and positive SARI samples are sent for Whole Genome Sequencing through the ICMR VRDL network, " an official source told PTI.
