IMD Issues Thunderstorm & Rain Alerts Across Andhra Pradesh, Kerala Until May 3

In Kerala, the IMD has sounded a yellow alert for Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur, warning of heavy rain with thunder, lightning, and gusty winds.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for parts of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rain, and gusty winds from May 1 to May 3, along with hot and humid conditions in several districts.

Andhra Pradesh: Thunderstorms & Gusty Winds

Residents across North Coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP), South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP), Yanam, and Rayalaseema have been advised to brace for thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places during the three-day period. The IMD noted that gusty winds reaching 40–50 km/h are likely over NCAP and Yanam, while winds of 30–40 km/h may sweep SCAP and Rayalaseema.

In addition to the storm warnings, the weather department warned of hot and humid conditions expected to persist over Andhra Pradesh and Yanam through May 2 with no significant change in temperature, as per a report on PTI. Vijayawada experienced heavy rain on Wednesday night, providing brief relief from the intense summer heat.

Meteorologists attribute the changing conditions to a north-south trough stretching from southeast Rajasthan to Kerala, and lower tropospheric southerly winds prevailing over Andhra Pradesh and Yanam.

Kerala: Yellow Alerts In 5 Districts

In Kerala, the IMD has sounded a yellow alert for Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur, warning of heavy rain with thunder, lightning, and gusty winds, as per a report on Manorama. The alert is in effect through May 3, with potential for severe weather, especially during the late afternoons and evenings.

The India Meteorological Department added that while rainfall is expected across multiple districts, certain areas may also see a spike in temperatures, with maximum temperatures reaching 37°C in Palakkad, and around 36°C in Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Thrissur, and Ernakulam. These districts are likely to experience hot and humid conditions, excluding high-altitude regions.

A thunderstorm warning has also been extended to Lakshadweep, where similar weather activity is forecast.
