IMD Issues Rainfall Alert For Tamil Nadu, Andhra & Puducherry Over Next 3 Days

This weather pattern is attributed to a well-marked low-pressure area over the west-central Bay of Bengal which is projected to move towards the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and northern Tamil Nadu.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory for Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry due to light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms over the next three days starting December 24, 2024. This weather pattern is attributed to a well-marked low-pressure area over the west-central Bay of Bengal which is projected to move towards the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and northern Tamil Nadu.

The IMD has noted that the low-pressure system is expected to move west-southwestwards, reaching the southwest Bay of Bengal near the northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh coasts by December 24. However, it remains uncertain whether this system will intensify further as it approaches the shoreline.

In addition to the rainfall, mist or haze is likely to prevail during the early morning hours in isolated pockets over interior Tamil Nadu. The IMD has also indicated that dry weather conditions were observed over north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal area prior to this forecasted change.

On December 24, isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated in districts such as Chengalpattu, Viluppuram, Cuddalore, and Puducherry, accompanied by thunderstorms in several areas, as per a report on The Hindustan Times. The Regional Meterological Centre (RMC) said: "Light to moderate rain at a few places over North Coastal Tamilnadu; at one or two places over rest Tamilnadu and over Puducherry & Karaikal area with thunderstorm and lightning at one or two places is likely to occur. Mist/Haze is likely to prevail during early morning hours at isolated pockets over Interior Tamilnadu."

The IMD also predicted rainfall in one or two places of Rayalaseema. IMD said: "Light to moderate Rain or Thundershowers likely at FEW places over SCAP. Light to moderate Rain or Thundershowers likely at ONE or TWO places over Rayalaseema. Light to moderate Rain likely at ONE or TWO places over NCAP & Yanam."

Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to stay alert and take necessary precautions during this period.
