IIT-Bombay Student Jumps To Death From Hostel Building, Cites Depression In ‘Suicide Note’
The student was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead before admission. The student had written a message on the board in his hostel room, the police said.
New Delhi: A 26-year-old student of IIT Bombay died by suicide as he jumped off the terrace of his hostel located on the Powai campus in Mumbai in the early hours on Monday.
Prima facie, the deceased student was undergoing treatment for depression, a senior officer said, as reported by news agency PTI.

The deceased student has been identified as Darshan Malviya. A Powai police station official informed that Darshan had written a message on the board in his hostel room stating no one should be held responsible for his death.
According to PTI, Darshan Malviya’s body was spotted by a watchman outside the seven-storey hostel building. He called up an official of the institute and later police were informed.
The student was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead before admission, the police official said.
Darshan Malviya hailed from Madhya Pradesh. He was pursuing a postgraduate course at the Indian Institute of Technology since last July.
His family members were informed about his death, the official stated.
Powai police station senior inspector Budhan Sawant said that the police have registered a case of accidental death.
“The student had written a message on the board in his hostel room which shows he was undergoing treatment for depression. Further investigation is underway,” he said, as quoted by PTI.
In the statement about the incident, IIT Bombay PRO said: “A very unfortunate incident took place at IIT Bombay today morning and we’ve lost a master’s student. We condole the death of our student”, news agency ANI reported.
