How to find if your milk is adulterated? Use this kit

New Delhi: Food adulteration has become a severe problem in past few years. We have heard our ancestors say that the food they consumed was more pure and healthy, whereas the food items sold now-a-days is impure and adulterated. To cure the problem of food adulteration, food safety regulator FSSAI is coming up with a kit, which would let one check if the milk they are consuming is adulterated or not. This kit will be made available in public domain and will be affordable for even for the poor at a very low price of Rs 10 to Rs 15. FSSAI, which works for the Ministry of health, is now looking for a company which could produce this kit at a large scale and release it in the market. How to find if your milk is adulterated? Use this kit ABP News image FSSAI conducts milk survey: “A survey conducted three months ago showed in general that milk adulteration was low in southern India, more in north India," Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) Chairman Ashish Bahuguna told media after a meeting of the Central Consumer Protection Council (CCPC). “A product can be substandard without impacting on health, those attributes we are for the time being keeping aside and focusing on those attributes which render a product unsafe”. FSSAI body in media briefing/ ABP News image FSSAI body in media briefing/ ABP News image In the survey, over 2000 samples of milk were collected from all over the country and the least number of adulteration cases were observed in Southern Indian, on a contrary the maximum number of cases were observed in the Northern part of the country. Among these were areas which had zero adulteration cases, which is a little hard to believe. Therefore, the body plans to re-do a survey in summers when the production of the milk is comparatively low and the chances of adulteration are likely to be higher. Kit to check purity of cooking oil: Not just milk, the food body FSSAI is also focusing on production of a kit which checks the purity of cooking oil, which is used every day in households.
