Host Nation Germany Debates G7 Summit Invitation To India Over Russia Stance: Report

While India’s participation is debated, Berlin itself has been criticised by governments including that of Ukraine and Poland for its continued reliance on Russia for energy imports.

New Delhi: As the host nation for the Group of Seven (G7) summit scheduled to be held in June this year, Germany is debating whether to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the summit as India has not openly condemned Russia for its invasion in Ukraine, reported Bloomberg.

The European nation is set to include Senegal, South Africa and Indonesia as guests at the meeting to be held in Bavaria, but any clear decision regarding India is yet to be made, reported Bloomberg quoting sources.

“India had been on a list drawn up before the war in Ukraine started, and a final decision hadn't been taken,” one of the people said.

The reason for Germany’s deliberation is that India abstained from voting in the United Nations Human Rights Council on the motion to suspend Russia and that no sanction has been imposed by New Delhi on Moscow.

While India’s participation is debated, Berlin itself has been criticised by governments including that of Ukraine and Poland for its continued reliance on Russia for energy imports. Germany has made several moves to cut dependence though the nation's companies largely rely on Russian natural gas to fuel their factories.

Steffen Hebestreit, German government’s spokesperson said that Berlin would soon finalise and present the list of guest attendees.

"The chancellor has repeatedly made clear that he would like to see as many international partners as possible joining the sanctions," Hebestreit said, quoted by Bloomberg.
