Gujarat Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani Arrested Over Criminal Conspiracy Charges For A Tweet On PM Modi
Assam police said they arrested Jignesh Mevani over his tweets claiming that PM Narendra Modi, who "considers Godse as God, should appeal for peace and harmony against communal clashes in Gujarat."
New Delhi: Congress MLA and Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani was arrested by Assam Police on Wednesday night, informed his team on social media. The police have filed a case against him under charges of criminal conspiracy and promoting enmity between two communities.
Filing a case against the Vadgam MLA, the Assam police said that they arrested Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani over his tweets claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who "considers Godse as God, should appeal for peace and harmony against communal clashes in Gujarat., reported ANI.
According to the Instagram post by the Gujarat MLA's team, Mevani was arrested from Palanpur circuit house and was taken to Ahmedabad last night. From there, he will be taken to Guwahati via flight.
Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar also took to Twitter to inform about Mevani's arrest.
“Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani arrested by Assam police from Palanpur circuit House. Police yet to share the copy of the FIR with us, we have been informed about some case filed against him in Assam and is likely to be deported to Assam tonight,” Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar tweeted.
A couple of tweets on Mevani's Twitter handle are not visible on his feed with a message displaying that the tweets have been withheld in India based on a "legal demand".
The supporters of Mevani have planned a protest against his arrest in the national capital today, reported news agency ANI.
Meanwhile, a tweet by the Gujarat Congress today, read, "Assam Police along with Gujarat Police is reported to have detained Gujarat MLA Mr Jignesh Mevani at 11:30 pm and taken him to Assam by train on April 21 from Ahmedabad at 4 am. Treating a public servant as a criminal at night is CONDEMNABLE."
Elected as an independent MLA, Mevani extended his support to the Congress party in September 2019.
