Former top IAS officer Anil Baijal appointed as Lieutenant Governor of Delhi: 5 Things to know about him

New Delhi: President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday accepted the resignation of Najeeb Jung  as Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. President Mukherjee appointed Anil Baijal to be the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office. FACTS ABOUT BAIJAL:
  • Baijal, a 1969 batch India Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Union Territories cadre
  • He was removed as Union home secretary when the UPA government assumed power in May, 2004
  • The former bureaucrat has also been the vice-chairman of the Delhi Development Authority and had headed key public sector companies like Prasar Bharti and Indian Airlines
  • Baijal was actively associated with the designing and roll-out of Rs 60,000 crore Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) launched by the Manmohan Singh government
  • The former bureaucrat was also on the executive council of the think-tank Vivekananda International Foundation, several of whose former members have been appointed to senior positions by the Modi government including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval
Jung had submitted his resignation on December 22, ending a nearly three-and-half-year-long eventful tenure, mostly marked by bitter confrontation with Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government.
