Former President Pranab Mukherjee's Daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee ‘Quits Active Politics’

Sharmistha Mukherjee also dismissed questions of joining any other party, but will continue to remain a primary member of Congress

New Delhi: Sharmistha Mukherjee, daughter of former President Pranab Mukherjee has quit active politics by announcing the decision on microblogging site Twitter. However, she noted that she will remain a primary member of the Congress party.

“Thanks so much, but no more a ‘politician’. I’ve quit politics. I remain & will continue to remain a primary member of Congress, but no more active politics for me. One can serve the nation in many other ways….” she tweeted.

Sharmistha also dismissed questions of joining any other party. She said that if she had to stay in politics then why would she leave Congress and join another party. “I have seen power since childhood. It doesn't inspire me. I want to live a peaceful life and do what is according to my nature,” said the leader.

Her brother Abhijit Mukherjee, also left the Congress and joined the TMC some time back. After leaving the party, speculations were also being made about Sharmishtha, but now she has announced to quit politics.

Sharmistha Mukherjee is a Kathak dancer and choreographer. In July 2014, Sharmistha Mukherjee joined the Congress party and contested only one election. In 2015, she contested from the Greater Kailash Assembly in Delhi on a Congress ticket. In this election, she had to face defeat against Saurabh Bhardwaj of Aam Aadmi Party.

In September 2019, she was appointed as a national spokesperson of the Congress. She had been keeping a low profile for the last couple of years, after resigning from the post of communications head for the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) in February 2019.
