Former CJI Ranjan Gogoi Reacts As MPs Move Privilege Motions Against Him In RS

When asked the former CJI if he attended parliament on Wednesday, he said, "Not today. I was there on Monday and on Tuesday. Should be there tomorrow."

Former Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi has reacted to several parties moving a privilege motion against him by saying that the 'law will take its course'. Gogoi, a nominated Rajya Sabha member faced flak for his comments on a television channel saying that he attends the house when he feels like it.

Two Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MPs and three from Congress moved a privilege motion against former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi for remarks on the Upper House. MPs from Shiv Sena, Samajwadi Party, CPI(M), and Muslim League have also now submitted notices.

When asked the former CJI if he attended parliament on Wednesday, he said, "Not today. I was there on Monday and on Tuesday. Should be there tomorrow," to ANI.

In the interview to NDTV, which is been quoted by opposition parties to target the Rajya Sabha MP, Gogoi had said that he skipped two sessions due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

“I go to Rajya Sabha when I feel like when I think there are matter of importance on which I can speak. And I am a nominated member, I am not governed by any party whip, whenever the bell rings for the party members to come, that does not bind me…. I go there by my choice and I come out at my choice. I am an independent member of the house,” he stated.

Justice Gogoi defended his choice to enter the Rajya Sabha four months after his tenure as the top judge of the Supreme Court ended in his recently published book, a move that drew significant criticism.
