Torrential rains wreaked havoc in several regions of north India, causing landslides, and flash floods that claimed the lives of several people across the region. The heavy rains killed 15 people and caused rivers, including the Yamuna in Delhi, to reach dangerous levels. Roads and residential areas were submerged in knee-deep water across the affected cities and towns, overwhelming the local infrastructure in the face of record-breaking rainfall.

  • Landslides and flash floods caused casualties in Jammu and Kashmir, with the bodies of two soldiers recovered, the report said. 
  • Srinagar experienced some relief, allowing the Amarnath cave shrine pilgrimage to resume, the report said. Snow fell in high-altitude areas of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, prompting red alerts for heavy rains, it added. 
  • According to the report, severe flooding and waterlogging in Punjab and Haryana prompted the establishment of a flood control room in Haryana. Due to the increased water levels in the rivers Markanda, Ghaggar, and Tangri, the Punjab government has directed officials to assist affected individuals, while Haryana has established a flood control room, it said. 
  • Delhi declared all schools closed, while Uttar Pradesh reported casualties and damage from heavy rain.
  • Regional variations in rainfall patterns across the country were highlighted by the India Meteorological Department.
  • The intense rainfall in northwest India was attributed to the interaction between a western disturbance and monsoonal winds, according to the IMD.
