Farm Laws Repeal Act 2021: President Ram Nath Kovind Approves Bill To Cancel Three Agricultural Laws

The Farm Laws Repeal Bill was taken up by the Lok Sabha which passed it within minutes and thereafter it was introduced in Rajya Sabha and was approved by voice vote.

New Delhi: President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday approved the bill to withdraw all the three agricultural laws. The bill was passed by both the houses of Parliament on November 29. With the approval of the President, all three agricultural laws have now been formally repealed.

The Farm Laws Repeal Bill, 2021, that sought to rescind the three agricultural laws passed last year to ease the rules around the sale, pricing and storage of crops, was taken up by the Lok Sabha which passed it within minutes and thereafter, was introduced in Rajya Sabha where it was approved by voice vote.

The Farmers’ (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 and the Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020 had triggered massive stir by farmer outfits, especially in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana over the last one year.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Manish Tewari on Wednesday demanded that the government should provide Rs 5 crore as compensation to the families of the farmers who have died during the agitation on farm laws and also accept other demands of the tillers, including a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address to the nation on November 19 had announced the decision to repeal the laws.
