Over Rs 1 crore cash seized from 4 states in last 24 hours

New Delhi: Undisclosed wealth and jewellery continue to be seized even 50 days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a sudden address to the nation announced the scrapping of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes. Within the last 24 hours, a sum total of Rs 1 crore cash has been seized from Pune to Jaipur. While post demonetization, Rs 763 crore cash in total has been seized from the entire country by Income Tax and ED officials. Pune, Maharashtra Rs 25 lakh cash in 2,000 rupee notes were seized from two persons on December 29 at the Pune Railway Station here, officials said. Picture: ABP News "During general checking, the police team questioned two passengers on the basis of suspicion who had come from Varanasi by the Gyan Ganga Express," said Sanjay Satav, senior inspector, Government Railway Police, Pune division. "The team asked them what was there in their bags. Since both the passengers started giving vague and misleading answers, they were taken to the GRP police station, where they were found to be having Rs 25 lakh cash in Rs 2,000 currency notes," Satav added. He said as per their statement, the cash belongs to a paper mill in Varanasi and they had come here to distribute salaries of some of their employees. "We have informed the Income Tax department, who will investigate the matter," Satav added. Picture: ABP News In an ongoing crackdown against black money, the Income Tax department conducted a raid at the 'Shri Ram Medical Store' and recovered a total of Rs 70 lakh. Of the amount seized, there were currency notes worth Rs 5 lakh were eaten by termites. Gold and jewllery worth lajhs has also been recovered in the raid. Jaipur, Rajasthan A trader has been detained here on December 29 with Rs 7 lakh in cash, of which Rs 6.35 lakh was in Rs  2,000 notes. Rameshwar Agarwal, a sugar trader and resident of Alwar district, was intercepted at a check post while he was on his way to Bhiwadi from Alwar. As Agarwal could not give any satisfactory reply about the source of the money, he was detained and the amount seized, a police officer said. "We have seized the currency notes and reported the matter to the Income Tax department for further investigation," SHO of Shivaji Park police station, Vinod Samaria said. Yesterday, Alwar police had detained six persons in separate cases for allegedly being involved in exchange of old currency notes illegally. 40 ATM cards and Rs 5.73 lakh in cash from the accused, police said.
