Water-Logging & Traffic Jams Slow Down Delhi-NCR After Heavy Rainfall, IMD Issues Alert For 2 Days

At 6 am on Wednesday, the IMD issued an alert for "one or two spells of moderate rain" and "heavy rain at isolated places" in Delhi-NCR.

New Delhi: Delhiites woke up to a rainy morning on Wednesday, but as they began to get on with their day waterlogged roads and traffic jams seems to have disrupted that. Low lying areas have been submerged in knee-deep water in parts of the city.

Due to the heavy water-logging, traffic movement at a few stretches was restricted and people were advised to avoid these routes.

At 6 am on Wednesday, the IMD issued an alert for "one or two spells of moderate rain" and "heavy rain at isolated places" in Delhi-NCR.

According to PTI, officials at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the Safdarjung Observatory, considered the official marker for the city, gauged 112.1 mm rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8:30 am on Wednesday, the highest in at least 12 years.

The weather stations at Lodhi Road, Ridge, Palam and Ayanagar recorded 120.2 mm, 81.6 mm, 71.1 mm and 68.2 mm rainfall, respectively, in the 24 hours ending 8:30 am.

The Delhi Traffic Police had earlier said that there is an obstruction in traffic at Azad Market Subway towards Pratap Nagar due to the waterlogging. Due to the waterlogging, the Zakhira underpass was closed and commuters were requested to take alternative routes from Anand Parbat or Roshanara Road. The Delhi Traffic Police also issued an advisory against traffic obstruction at the Azad Market Subway going towards Pratap Nagar due to the heavy waterlogging at the road.

Rainfall remains on the forecast from September 1-4. In the month of August, the national capital has recorded 144.7 mm of rainfall till August 30. This is around 31 percent below the normal of 209.4 mm for the month, according to the IMD statistics.
