Delhi Logs 1,042 Fresh Covid Cases, 2 Deaths. Positivity Rate Stands At 4.64%

With the national capital witnessing a spike in cases, the number of active cases rose to 3,253 from 601 on April 11.

New Delhi: Amid the surge in Covid-19 cases, Delhi clocked 1,042 fresh cases in the last 24 hours on Friday, taking the cumulative count to 18,72,699. Two persons succumbed to the infection taking the toll to 26,164.

According to data shared by the city health department, a total of 22,442 tests were conducted in the city a day back and the positivity rate stood at 4.64%.

With the national capital witnessing a spike in cases, the number of active cases rose to 3,253 from 601 on April 11.

However, the hospitalisation rate has been low so far with less than three per cent of the total active cases in hospitals, the data showed.

At present, there are 58 patients admitted in hospitals while 2,173 are recuperating in home isolation. Out of 9,705 Covid beds available in various hospitals, just 94 (0.97 per cent) are occupied.

Notably, the national capital had reported one death and 965 Covid cases, with a positivity rate of 4.71 per cent on Thursday, and had logged one death and 1,009 cases the day before with a positivity rate of 5.7 per cent.

On Tuesday, Delhi saw 632 cases with a positivity rate of 4.42 per cent. The previous day saw 501 cases with a positivity rate of 7.72 per cent.

Meanwhile, in the wake of rising cases, the Delhi government on Friday issued an order making wearing of masks in public places mandatory and those flouting the norms would have to pay a fine of Rs 500.

However, those travelling in private vehicles have been exempted from the rule of fine, the order said.

Earlier, on April 12, the government had lifted the penalty for not wearing masks because of a decline in Covid cases.

Meanwhile, the city health department on Thursday said that Delhi has started providing free Covid precautionary doses to beneficiaries in the 18-59 age group at government vaccination centres.

The city has also started genome sequencing of samples of all infected people to ascertain if a new variant, such as the XE, has spread in Delhi.
