Delhi HC Disposes Plea Seeking FIR As Rahul Gandhi Takes Down Tweet Revealing Identity Of Minor Rape Victim

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday disposed of a petition seeking registration of an FIR against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for revealing the identity of an alleged rape victim

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday disposed of a petition seeking registration of an FIR against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

The petition in the high court had sought an FIR against the Congress leader for revealing the identity of an alleged rape victim.

The court disposed the ple after the Congress leader, the Delhi police and social media platform X submitted that the said tweet has been taken down.

Gandhi informed the high court that he has deleted the said tweet from the social media platform X. He was accused of revealing the identity of an alleged minor rape victim in a tweet.

The Delhi Police apprised the high court that an FIR has been lodged against Gandhi for his social media post revealing the identity of alleged rape victim in 2021 and further investigation is underway, the PTI reported.

Disclosing the identity of a rape victim constitutes an offence punishable with imprisonment up to two years and fine.      

The counsel for Gandhi informed a bench of that he has taken down the tweet which revealed the identity of a minor Dalit girl who was allegedly raped and murdered.

A bench of acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet PS Arora presided over the hearing of the case.

The counsel for social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) confirmed before the court that Gandhi deleted the tweet himself, the report said.

According to the report, in 2021, a petition was filed by social activist Makarand Suresh Mhadlekar seeking an FIR against the Congress leader for revealing the identity of the victim by publishing a photograph with her parents on microblogging site X.

Noting the submissions of all the parties including the Delhi Police, X and Rahul Gandhi, the high court said the prayers in the petition stand satisfied and disposed the plea.
