MCD Polls: BJP Alleges Violation Of Model Code By Kejriwal, SEC Writes To Election Officer

After the complaint, the election panel has written to New Delhi District Election Officer (DEO), saying the event had been brought to the commission's notice.

New Delhi: BJP's Delhi unit on Friday alleged violation of Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and lodged a complaint with the State Election Commission. This comes just two days ahead of the MCD polls.

According to a report by news agency PTI, the alleged MCC violation took place at an event -- 'Dilli ki Yogshala: Yog Prashikon ko Samman Rashi Ka Vitran' -- attended by CM Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia at Constitution Club.

After the complaint, the election panel has written to New Delhi District Election Officer (DEO), saying the event had been brought to the commission's notice.

"In this regard, it is to inform that that no such permission has been obtained from the State Election Commission and if any permission has been obtained from the State Election Commission and if any permission had been granted from district level, the same may be checked and it must be ensured that that there is no violation of MCC under any circumstances," reads the letter.

After verification of all the facts, immediate action must be taken and an action taken report submitted by Friday itself, the letter said.

In case there is an MCC violation, necessary "legal action" should be taken, it added.

Earlier in the day, BJP's Delhi unit election campaign panel convener Ashish Sood said that a case should be registered against Kejriwal for violating the MCC.

"The Delhi Chief Minister openly violated the Model Code of Conduct in the programme. He organised the programme without any permission, for distributing cheques from foreign NGOs in the Constitution Club," Sood alleged.

He also demanded action against the district magistrate for "not taking action" to stop the event.

Addressing a gathering, CM Kejriwal said free yoga classes in the city would continue, irrespective of the availability of funds.

Many donors have come forward to financially sustain the scheme by offering to pay an honorarium to many yoga instructors.

Notably, Municipal Corporation of Delhi polls are due on December 4 and votes will be counted on December 7.
