Cyclone Biparjoy Will Bring Squally Wind Speed Near Gujarat Coast, Not Direct Impact: IMD — Updates

Cyclone Biparjoy Updates: The IMD stated that the very severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy will intensify further and move nearly north-northwestwards in the next two days.

Cyclone Biparjoy Updates: The first cyclone in the Arabian Sea this year Cyclone Biparjoy will not have a direct impact on Indian coasts but will indirectly bring squally wind speed near the Gujarat coast, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated. The very severe cyclonic storm Biparjoy over the east-central Arabian Sea was centred at about 820 km west of Mumbai and 830 km south-southwest of Porbandar at 8:30 AM today. It will intensify further in 36 hours and move nearly north-northwestwards in the next two days.

"Biparjoy is away from Indian coasts, therefore there is no direct impact but indirectly, squally wind speed will commence near Gujarat coast...We are advising fishermen not to venture into the central Arabian Sea till the 13th and north Arabian Sea till the 15th," IMD Director-general Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra told news agency ANI.

"VSCS BIPARJOY lay centered at 0830 hours IST today, about 820 km WSW of Mumbai, 830 km SSW of Porbandar and 1120 km S of Karachi. To intensify during next 36 hrs," the IMD stated in a tweet.

In a prior tweet, the met department said that the storm will move nearly north-northwestwards in the next 2 days.

  • Gujarat fishermen have been asked to return to the coast from deep sea areas and ports instructed to hoist Distant Warning signal (DW II), said news agency PTI reported officials as saying on Thursday. Fishermen have been asked to return to shore as wind speed may reach up to 160 km per hour in the sea on June 11 and 12.

  • Due to the cyclone, the wind speed may go up to 45 to 55 knots on June 10, 11, and 12. The speed may also touch the 65-knot mark. The cyclone would bring light rains and thunderstorms in coastal regions, including Gujarat's south Gujarat and Saurashtra.

  • All ports have been asked to hoist Distant Warning signal, said the Director of IMD's Meteorological Centre in Ahmedabad, Manorama Mohanty, as per PTI.

  • As per international procedure, ports have been advised to hoist signals whenever adverse weather is expected over them in oceanic areas to alert vessels and ensure the safety of maritime activities.

  • District collectors of the coastal region are geared up to face any eventuality in the coming days. Jamnagar collector BA Shah told PTI that nearly 76,000 people reside in 22 villages situated on the coastline of the district and elaborate plans are in place to shift them to safer places if need arises. All district, as well as taluka officials, have been asked to remain stationed at their headquarters until further orders.

  • A district-level disaster control room has been activated.

  • 15 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and 11 of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been put on standby for rain relief operations in Gujarat, Gujarat relief commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey said, as per PTI.

  • Atmospheric conditions and cloud mass indicate that the system is likely to sustain the strength of a very severe cyclone till June 12.
