In Biggest Spike So Far, Maharashtra Records 2,682 New Covid-19 Cases; Delhi's Tally Crosses 16,000-Mark

Mumbai alone accounts for a total of over 35,000 coronavirus cases comprising active cases at 25,694, while the death toll stands at 1,135 as of today. Mumbai is the worst-hit city, not only in Maharashtra but all of India.

New Delhi: With 2,682 new cases of Coronavirus infection in the last 24 hours, Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit state of the country with Covid-19 tally reaching to 62,228 as off now. As per a latest data shared by Maharashtra Health Department, the state has also recorded 116 deaths today, the highest number of deaths due to COVID-19 in a single day. Overall death toll in Maharashtra now stands at 2,098. A report by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that no death due to Coronavirus were reported in Dharavi area of Mumbai on Friday. However, it added that 41 persons have been tested positive in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of positive cases to 1715. Death toll in the area stands at 70. ALSO WATCH | Maharashtra: 131 Police Officials Test Covid-19 Positive In Last 24 Hours Meanwhile, Delhi's Covid-19 death toll has mounted to 398 with 82 fatalities that took place in the last one month being reported on Friday, as the national capital's Coronavirus positive cases tally jumped to over 17,000. Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Heath minister Satyendar Jain, in a virtual joint press conference earlier in the day, also announced that 13 of the 82 deaths occurred on May 27. "The remaining 69 deaths have taken place over a period of 34 days. These cases are being recorded now due to late reporting by various hospitals or due to incomplete submission of information," Sisodia told reporters. Fresh 1,106 Coronavirus cases have been reported in the national capital in the last 24 hours whereas 7,846 people have recovered from the infection. This is the highest single-day spike in coronavirus reported so far in Delhi. This is the first time in Delhi that over 1,100 COVID-19 cases have been reported in a day. The previous highest spike of 1,024 fresh cases was recorded on May 28, taking the tally of coronavirus cases in Delhi to over 16,000. ALSO WATCH | Amit Shah Meets PM Modi To Brief Over CM's Views On Lockdown Extension On a national level, India on Friday not only recorded its largest jump in new cases as it added 7,466 new Covid patients in 24 hours, emerging as the ninth worst-hit country in the world by pandemic, but it also surpassed China's toll of 4,638 so far as it recorded 4,706 deaths. While China was the first country to report disease last December and recorded over 84,000 total cases so far, India that reported its first case in January end, now has 1,65,799 cases that is more than Turkey's (1,60,979). However, amongst the few respites that the country has gained over the past few months, is that it has shown a 42.88 per cent recovery with 71,105 of the patients who contacted the disease being cured and sent back home. In the past one day, 175 deaths were also reported.
