Congress G-23 Leaders Expected To Meet Tomorrow, Discuss Reasons Behind Poll Defeat
The G-23 was formed after a group of leaders in August 2020, wrote a letter to party president Sonia Gandhi demanding reforms in the Congress party.
New Delhi: After humiliating defeat in the recently concluded assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa, the Congress G-23 leaders are likely to hold a meeting tomorrow, reported news agency ANI, citing sources.
Other Congress leaders are also expected to take part in the G-23 meeting.
The G-23 is a rebel group comprising of leaders like Manish Tewari, Kapil Sibal, Anand Sharma and Ghulam Nabi Azad. They are also members of the Congress Working Committee (CWC).
The rebel group was formed after a group of leaders in August 2020, wrote a letter to party president Sonia Gandhi demanding reforms in the Congress party.
The meeting to be held in Delhi will focus on future course of action of the G-23 leaders. The meet becomes even more important as assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat are slated to be held later this year.
According to ANI sources, the meeting will begin at 7 pm tomorrow for which a venue is yet to be decided. It will be a hybrid mode meeting with some leaders expected to join virtually.
On Friday, the G-23 group met at senior party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad's residence to raise demands for reforms in the party.
The meeting at Azad's residence was held much before the CWC meeting called by Congress in view of the poll defeat.
Congress' performance in all five states were extremely poor. In Uttar Pradesh it could only bag 2 seats in the 403 member assembly, while in Punjab it was reduced to 18 seats.
