Chhattisgarh: Sub Inspector Injured In Encounter With Naxalites In Bijapur

The gunfight broke out at around 7 pm along Tarrem-Chinagelur road under Tarrem police station limits when a team was out on a search operation, a police official said.

A sub inspector was injured in an exchange of fire between Naxalites and security forces in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on Sunday, according to a police official, news agency PTI reported.

"Rajesh Suryawanshi, a sub inspector posted at Tarrem police station, suffered minor injuries in the incident," Inspector General (IG) of Police (Bastar range) Sundarraj P said. 

"The gunfight broke out at around 7 pm along Tarrem-Chinagelur road under Tarrem police station limits when a team was out on a search operation:" IG told PTI. 

However, the Naxalites soon escaped into dense forests on finding security personnel zeroing in on them, he said.

A joint team of Special Task Force (STF) and Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) is carrying out a search operation in the area, he added.

Earlier today, naxalites allegedly killed two people in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district including the brother of one of their operatives, PTI reported. 

According to Bastar Range Inspector General of Police Sundarraj P, "information was received about Naxalites allegedly killing two people in Pedakorma and Pusnar villages within the Gangaloor police station limits," PTI reported.

The IG stated that one of the deceased is believed to be Raju Podiyami, the brother of Gangaloor area committee secretary Dinesh Modiyam of the proscribed outfit, and that information about the killing of villager Dula Kodme was being verified.

Dinesh Mudiyam killed colleague Vijja Modiyam in an internal fight last year, he added further. 

According to police statistics, seven security personnel were killed and 43 injured in 131 Naxal incidents till June 30 this year. As many as 41 security personnel were killed and 103 injured during the same period last year, Business Standard reported.
