Following a request from the state government, The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) issued a notification for a CBI probe in the case.

Giri was the President of India's largest organization of sadhus. The sudden demise of a revered spiritual leader under mysterious circumstances sent shockwaves across the country. Police had earlier, recovered a handwritten suicide note from the Math which contained the names of three people including Mahant Narendra Giri’s disciple Anand Giri.
