'CBI Investigating Rahul Gandhi's British Citizenship': BJP Member Tells Delhi HC
The Delhi High Court in a previous hearing had asked BJP leader Subramanian Swamy to produce details of another ongoing PIL in the Allahabad High Court with similar pleas.
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday was told that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is investigating the matter of alleged British citizenship of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
The Delhi High Court in a previous hearing had asked BJP leader Subramanian Swamy to produce details of another ongoing PIL in the Allahabad High Court with similar pleas.
A bench of Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela heard the matter.
Today, the petitioner in the Allahabad High Court, BJP Member Vignesh Shishir informed the Delhi High Court that he has appeared before CBI in this case and has tendered very confidential evidences in this matter. He said that the CBI is presently investigating the matter.
Shishir then requested for some time to place on record the relevant documents on the development that has taken place in his PIL before the Allahabad High Court.
The court granted him two weeks time to file the details along with an application for impleadment.
The Delhi HC bench today orally remarked that the PIL pending before the Allahabad High Court involves wider prayers and does not want two parallel proceedings on one issue.
Swamy however contended that he was the first one to raise the issue back in 2017. Swamy has sought a direction to the Centre to file a status report on his complaint against the Congress leader.
Swamy's plea states that on August 6, 2019, he had had written to home ministry alleging that Rahul Gandhi had voluntarily disclosed to the British government that he was a citizen of British nationality, amounting to holding a British passport.
The Allahabad High Court on September 25 sought Centre's stance on a PIL filed by a BJP member from Karnataka, seeking a CBI probe into Congress leader and LoP in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi's alleged British Citizenship. The petitioner has sought cancellation of Rahul Gandhi's citizenship.
The Allahabad High Court had asked Centre about the proposed decision on the representation by the petitioner filed under the Section 9(2) of the Citizenship Act, 1955, the report said.
