CAA Protests: ‘Leading Crowds To Violence Is Not Leadership,’ Says Army Chief Rawat

This is the first time General Rawat, who is to retire on December 31, made a statement over prevailing law and order situation in the country.

New Delhi: Commenting on the ongoing nationwide protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, Army Chief General Bipin Rawat, on Thursday, said that it is not  leadership if leaders guide masses to carry out acts of violence in the name of dissent. “Leaders are not those who lead people in inappropriate direction. As we are witnessing in large number of universities and colleges, students the way they are leading masses and crowds to carry out arson and violence in cities and towns. This is not leadership,” he said while addressing a gathering at a health summit. Since both houses of Parliament approved amendments to the citizenship law earlier this month, protests - sometimes violent - have taken place across the country. Multiple protestors have been injured and have died in these protests, especially in Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka. "What is so complex about leadership, if it is all about leading. Because when you move forward, everybody follows. It is not that simple. It appears simple, but it is a complex phenomenon," Rawat said in his speech. This is the first time General Rawat, who is to retire on December 31, made a statement over prevailing law and order situation in the country. General Rawat is among the top contender for the post of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), the Principal Military Adviser to the Defence Minister on tri-services matters.
