Vishwanath Mahadeshwar of Shiv Sena elected as Mayor of Mumbai: 5 things to know
Mumbai: Shiv Sena's Vishwanath Mahadeshwar was elected as Mayor of Mumbai on Wednesday. He won with 171 votes. 218/227 corporators participated in voting.

- Mahadeshwar promises corporators to speed up several projects in BMC. Mahadeshwar thanks Thackerays for believing in him.
- He was the strongest contender for the post after BJP withdrew from the mayoral race.The BMC has 227 corporators. However, Mahadeshwar is facing legal trouble after a case has been filed in the court challenging his election.
- Local leader of the Congress Dharmesh Vyas, who filed a petition, said, "As a principal of a government-aided school, he had suppressed the information that he was drawing a salary from government grants which makes him ineligible even to become a corporator."The matter would be heard on April 6.
- Another independent candidate from the same ward, Mahendra Pawar too has filed a case alleging that a mayoral candidate has purchased his current flat by "flouting the rules". The hearing in the matter will take place on March 23.
- In the 227-member BMC House, the Shiv Sena secured 84 seats, the BJP got 82, the Congress 31, the NCP nine, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena seven, the Samajwadi Party six, the AIMIM two, the Akhil Bharatiya Sena one while five Independents also won. Four independents had extended support to the Shiv Sena, while the ABS had offered to support the BJP, which were yet still far away from the magic figure of 114 for electing their Mayor.
