Bindeshwar Pathak, a pioneering figure in the construction of public toilets, was at the forefront of the movement for environmental sanitation and waste management.

Renowned social activist and founder of Sulabh International, Bindeshwar Pathak passed away at AIIMS in New Delhi on Tuesday due to cardiac arrest. He was 80 years old. Pathak, a pioneering figure in the construction of public toilets, was at the forefront of the movement for human rights, environmental sanitation, waste management, and educational reforms.

Pathak's demise occurred shortly after he hoisted the national flag at the Sulabh International headquarters on the occasion of Independence Day. He collapsed soon after the flag hoisting. While he was pronounced dead at AIIMS by his aide, the hospital source told PTI that he was brought in already deceased at 1:42 pm. The cause of death was confirmed to be cardiac arrest.

Sulabh International, under Pathak's leadership, worked extensively to promote human rights, environmental sanitation, waste management, and education reforms. The organisation's work towards eradicating open defecation and providing dignified restroom facilities significantly impacted public health and hygiene across India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, stating, "The passing away of Dr Bindeshwar Pathak Ji is a profound loss for our nation. He was a visionary who worked extensively for societal progress and empowering the downtrodden."

PM Modi further acknowledged Pathak's dedication to the Swachh Bharat Mission and his instrumental role in the Sulabh toilet revolution.

Pathak's legacy extends beyond technological innovation. He was an advocate for the eradication of manual scavenging and sought to uplift marginalised communities.
